Five tips for kids coping with bullying
January 20th 2008 by Megan Bayliss in Child Abuse
Worried about your child being bullied? Me too. Bullying is a scourge on our kids safety. It has become so common, is very scary and parents often do not know what to do.
We are here to help you with some ideas and anti bullying responses.
One of Imaginif’s writers (currently having time off to set up a new school system) has written a book on bullying. It is the BEST I have read and has lots of great tips and worksheets in it. You can buy her book as a down loadable elink too. BRILLIANT for instant help with anti bullying techniques. Plus, it is MUCH cheaper like that. Click here to buy Coral’s book (pictured).
Bullies seek POWER. If they do not get their craving for power satisfied by one victim, they will quickly move onto another. Is your child the ongoing victim or do they use “bully BITSS” (Coral calls them “bully bullets”) to protect them self?
The trick to survival is to stay off the bully’s weapon sights so that the bully does not pick up victim-vibes. How to do that!? Encourage and maintain a high level of self-esteem (stand up tall, head up, believe in yourself and look a bully in the eye). But, if the kids (or parents) do not feel strong inside then there are some tricky rubber word BITSS to bounce so that you can all ‘fake it’ until you spring back strong.
Here’s five bully BITSS that make you MUCH smarter than bullies:
- You’re fat; ANSWER Body wise? Am I? Well thank you for that. Too kind, I’m mind wise too.
- We don’t want you to play with us; ANSWER Intuition told me that because I am emotionally intelligent. But thanks for letting me know anyway. I’ll go play with Sally.
- I don’t like you; ANSWER Touché! Well it’s a waste of my time touching your heart then!
- We don’t want you in our group; Answer Superior! I can go make some new friends and start a new group then.
- You’re a jerk!; Answer So where’s your evidence, for goodness sake? I have five friends who say otherwise.
Bully BITSS hurt no one. They just baffle the bully. A bully BITT uses the main BITSS words (from BITSS of protective behaviours) to change the balance of power and makes you smarter.
Bullies want to hurt you, but bully word BITSS turn a hurtful put down into a favour (they ALWAYS bounce back a positive) and take away bully power. Now that’s smart and super cool!
