Scrapbook your life story and heal through the process: Scrapathy

December 6th 2007 by Megan Bayliss in Child Abuse

Article by Megan BaylissScrapathy is the therapeutic marriage of Life Story Work with Scrap book tenets and techniques. Designed to help kids in out of home care to integrate their pain and understand who they are, why they are in care and where they are going, it is a hands on practical course where participants are encouraged to make a scrap book page for themselves and ultimately a scrapbook album of a child or young person’s life story work.

Imaginif facilitated our second Scrapathy workshop yesterday. Life Story Work is an area of need and curiosity for many social science and child protection workers. Scrapbooking is something that many people, foster carers included, are interested in. Combining the two into a six hour workshop makes for a wonderfully effective way to retain workshop information and to increase skill, therapeutic tools and debrief all at the same time. We had a blast - none of us overtly artistic, we managed to scrap our way through attachment disordered behaviours in the hope that integration would produce some fine pages for the day. It did!

What did you do at work yesterday? This is what we did:

Although I ended up on the scrap heap last night (went to bed at 7.30pm!!!!) I will do this again for those that missed out this time around. Next Life Story Work course (Scrapathy) will be held in Cairns in March 2008. Please contact Imaginif to register your interest now. Places will be strictly limited to 12.

Do not forget to submit your child safety tip for our December competition.

Stumble it!

Hi Megan , I tagged you for the 5 post meme if you are interested. It is very easy you just post links to 5 favourite posts on family/friends/yourself/love/anything you like.

Hey Trish, I’m really glad that you at least started the Life Story Work - the beauty of it is that it can again be picked up at any stage. I absolutely love it. I did a book for my son’s 21st birthday - it was very powerful for him.
Thanks for the meme tag. I may not get to it until next week because of my current work load :( Have one from Angesbiz as well so hopefully by Monday - my desk will be cleared and I’ll have some play time.

Thanks Megan The scrapathy workshop was great. We are taking the boy on a long camping trip so the camera is ready. We can scrapbook our holiday. I can also take photo’s of where the boys were born etc while we are away ( for their life story book ). Have a great xmas everyone. Rosemay

Rosemary photos of where the boys were born will be fantastic for their life-story work books. When you are back home, you will experience the power of both boys looking at their place of birth and seeing past hurt/rejection integration take place. It gives kids in care a sense of beginning and belonging.
It was a pleasure and privilege to have you in the workshop. Thank you Rosemary. Stay safe while you are away. Merry Christmas to you all.
